TASCHEN publishing house

TASCHEN Verlag is an independent, family-owned art book publisher for illustrated books with publications on the subjects of art, architecture, design, film, photography and lifestyle, which was founded in 1980 by Benedikt Taschen in Cologne.

With more than 20 million books sold each year, Taschen-Verlag is the world market leader in the illustrated book sector. Taschen has subsidiaries in Germany, the USA, Great Britain, France, Spain, Japan and Hong Kong.

In 2019, the publisher acquired shares in a bookbinder's shop in Italy, where the limited editions of the SUMO art book projects are hand-crafted by masters of letterpress art.

The publisher operates its own "Taschen-Stores" bookstores in Beverly Hills, Brussels, Hollywood, Cologne, London, Milan, Miami and Paris. Occasionally additional pop-up stores were opened in Madrid, Paris and Berlin. Taschenauch has had a store in Berlin again since December 2016, and also in Hong Kong since August 2018.

New Sebastião Salgado. Gold

For a decade, Serra Pelada evoked the long-promised El Dorado as the world’s largest open-air gold mine, employing some 50,000 diggers in appalling conditions.

Today, Brazil’s gold rush is merely the stuff of legend, kept alive by a few happy memories, many pained regrets—and Sebastião Salgado’s photographs. This collection is a major document of modern history and an extraordinary photographic portfolio.

Also available in a signed and limited Collector’s Edition and as an Art Edition

“Salgado’s photographs project an immediacy that makes them vividly contemporary. We know that the mine at Serra Pelada is now closed, yet the intense drama of the gold rush leaps out of these images.”
— Alan Riding

New Christo and Jeanne-Claude. Updated Edition XXL

“Each project is like a slice of our lives, part of something that I will never forget.”
- Christo

Part biography, part critical analysis, part catalogue, this updated edition brings back TASCHEN’s best-selling Collector’s Edition, designed by Christo himself. It spans Christo and Jeanne-Claude’s entire work, from early drawings and family photos to plans for future projects.

Hundreds of photographs and drawings trace the couple’s projects from the past 10 years, including The Floating Piers and The London Mastaba, as well as works in progress such as The Mastaba of Abu Dhabi and L’Arc de Triomphe Wrapped, Paris.

In addition to comprehensive photographic documentation by Wolfgang Volz and an updated introduction by Paul Goldberger, the book features a conversation between the artists and the author. It was the last conversation about their work that Jeanne-Claude had before her passing in 2009.

The result is an eloquent homage to Jeanne-Claude and a celebration of the work of two artists whose imagination has affected the landscape of every continent.

Gathering 464 images and a new booklet that takes us through the making of the SUMO, it’s a spectacular tribute to the larger-than-life photographer.

New 100 Contemporary Wood Buildings (compendium)

Timberland - The wooden structures of the 21st century

Travel the world to investigate one of the greatest renaissances in architecture: wood. How has this elemental material come to steal the show at luxury hot spring structures and cutting-edge urban renewal schemes? With 100 projects from China, Chile, and everywhere in between, this global survey explores the technical, environmental, and sensory elements that have inspired a return to timber.

This Bibliotheca Universalis edition explores how architects around the world have created and invented with this elementary material. Featuring follies, very large buildings, and ambitious urban renewal schemes, it celebrates the diverse deployment of wood by architects around the world. We see how wood can at once transform urban spaces, as in the Metropol Parasol in Seville by Jürgen Mayer H., and allow for sensitive interventions in natural environments, such as at the Termas Geométricas Hot Springs Complex in Pucón, Chile, by Germán del Sol.
